ABSTRACT

Ankylosis of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) can be classified based on the location (intra and extra-articular), the type of tissue involved (bony, fibrous or fibro-osseous) and extent of fusion (complete, incomplete). The literature also classified as true or false ankylosis. Any condition that leads to bone or fibrous adhesion between the surfaces of the TMJ ankylosis is true. The results from false ankylosis pathological diseases not directly related to the joint. The ankylosis of the TMJ is an affliction of extremely pleasant and cause problems in chewing, digestion, speech, appearance, and hygiene. In patients on growth, deformities of the mandible and maxillar can occur with malocclusion. The surgical treatment of ankylosis of the TMJ is a very controversial topic in literature. Arthroplasty can be a simple practice, a material with interposition arthroplasty (dermo-fat graft headset, costocondral and temporalis muscle), replacing the joint with prosthesis and even perform mandibular distraction.
