ABSTRACT

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis primarily occurs after trauma in the condylar region. When this event takes place, it results in functional and aesthetics deformities in the patient, being necessary an early intervention in order to avoid further consequences arising from such ankylosis. Therefore, different treatment methods have been proposed. All of them include the removal of the ankylotic block so joint function can be returned. The highest success rate has been obtained using interposition material between the remodeled surfaces. The using of the articular disk brings certain advantages such as not being necessary a different donor site’s morbidity. It is also autologous so there is no possibility of its rejection. Even though the effectiveness of using the articular disk has been proved; there is little reference in the literature of its use as interposition material. We present a case of a patient with bilateral temporomandibular joint ankylosis who was treated with interposition arthroplasty and discopexy, obtaining satisfactory results.

Key words: Ankylosis, temporomandibular joint, discopexy.
