Information based consent for third molar surgery. Evaluating patient comprehension

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to assess comprehension of informed consent in third molar surgery through a survey at the end of the procedure. Results were obtained as 150 surveys, of which 1.33% said that they had not received clear information about their treatment and 2% did not understand the content of the consent under information. The 2.66% considered to not had the opportunity to ask to the doctor their doubts about the intervention, 15.33% said they did not know they could refuse to receive the proposed treatment and 34.67% felt that the document serves to hold harmless the medical complications. The 100% of respondents knew that the procedure could present risks and complications, and 36% did not recall any complication. The most frequently reported complications were swelling, pain, bleeding. In numerical scale of 0-10, patients expressed the amount of information provided that properly understood, 5.33% selected between 5 and 7 of the scale, was marked the 8 in 18.67%, 24% scored 9 and 52% considered have understood all the information, scoring 10. Regarding the amount of information received, 76% said the information was sufficient. Conclusion: Although most patients understood the information provided, it is necessary to ensure that the information is transmitted to the patient in a complete and easy form, so that they can make the decision that suits them to accept or refuse treatment.
