ABSTRACT

The frequency of congenital malformations in pregnant women products that are exposed either to a teratogenic agent, to an infection or suffering from a chronic degenerative disease increases to 14.9 per 1,000. Objective: To determine the frequency and risk factors in cleft lip in a period of three years at the General Hospital Medical Center «La Raza» pediatric maxillofacial surgery service. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective and cross-reviewed records for patients with cleft palate who attended the first consultation. Were analyzed, age of mother and father, number of pregnancy, gestational age, gender, birth weight, place of residence intake of drugs, addiction (alcohol, snuff and drugs). Descriptive statistics with measures of central tendency and dispersion χ2 type association. Results: Of 510 cases, only 98 were included by having complete medical history and with the inclusion criteria. Risk factors: maternal age less to twenty years with their first pregnancy; the 12.6% reported drug intake (snuff and alcohol) of the mother, the place of residence more frequently is the State of Mexico in 49.48%, the 9.2% of the mothers had risk factor for drug intake in the first trimester of pregnancy. Conclusions: Risk factors affecting this population to provide cleft lip are the intake of alcohol, snuff, infections during the first trimester, and analgesic drug intake, the intake of folic acid late and the place of residence.
