ABSTRACT
Introduction: at present, the wide spectrum of existing medications worldwide, as well as the easy accessibility to many of them have led to a noticeable increase in the number of poisonings related to these agents.
Objective: to characterize the drug acute poisonings, consulted at the National Center of Toxicology (CENATOX) during 2004-2008.
Methods: a descriptive-retrospective study was conducted comprising all the drug acute poisonings consulted at the Service of Emergency Information of CENATOX. The variables used were: origin of the consultation, elapsed time between the incident and the toxicological consultation, province of residence, age, sex, circumstance and place where the event occurred, pharmacological groups involved , drugs of higher incidence and the interrelation among variables.
Results: the highest number of consultations were requested from health institutions (97.7 %) and the greater number of poisoned patients belonged to the range of 10-19 years old.The mean time between the toxic event and the consultation was two hours. The acute intentional poisoning prevailed. Females were more affected and the 87.5 % of poisonings took place at home. Antidepressive drugs were dominant, Carbamazepine and Amitriptiline were the drugs of higher incidence.
Conclusions: Emergency Information Service of CENATOX provides usfuel information about acute poisonings suffered by people that ingest drugs inappropriately. This will allow the design of action tools from the preventive point of view.
