ABSTRACT

Objetive: Autologous blood injection into the upper joint space has been used since 1964; although it is a safe, fast and minimally invasive technique, it has not been a common option for recurrent temporomandibular joint dislocation. The objective of the study was to describe our experience with this procedure. Patients and methods: Ten patients were diagnosed with chronic recurrent temporomandibular joint dislocation based on the Nitzan criteria; autologous blood injection was administered at the upper joint compartment followed by intermaxillary fixation. Results: Nine patients had successful outcomes and did not require an open surgery procedure. Conclusion: Autologous blood injection to the temporomandibular joint aims to limit the jaw’s movement and avoid recurrent dislocation. It is a safe, low cost and effective alternative treatment.

Key words: Dislocation, temporomandibular joint, injection.
