ABSTRACT

Smoking has been associated with with high risks and complications in patients prone to be surgically treated by an invasive procedure. This concept is very useful in the area of implant dentistry, since the negative effects of this habit leads directly to increased percentage of loss of osseointegrated implants and complications in guided bone regeneration procedures. As a general rule, surgeons will ask their patients to stop smoking to reduce the risk of complications, so that facing chronic smokers patients requiring implant therapy represents a challenge for the maxillofacial surgeon, because as we know, tobacco with all its components increases the degree of complications. In this article the case of three chronic smoking patients requiring treatment with osseointegrated implants is reported.

Key words: bone anchored implants, smoking, hybrid prosthesis.
