ABSTRACT
Euthyroid goiter, benign nodular disease, and follicular cell carcinomas are common
thyroid illnesses in the endocrinology service. The thyroid hormone-based
treatment is prescribed for these cases. Since there is no consensus in medical
literature about the indications and benefits of these hormones, it was decided to
review the usefulness (risk/benefit) of the use of this therapy, for which the regulating mechanisms of formation and action of thyroid hormones were reviewed
in addition to describing the likely beneficial and deleterious osseous and
cardiovascular effects of suppressive thyroid hormone dose. There were also
comments on the future usefulness of thyrotrophin analogues for treating these
illnesses. Finally, it was recommended to analyze the indications and advantages of
this therapy in endocrinology services.
