ABSTRACT

The corticotomies consist, as its name implies, cuts in the cortical bone of the alveolar processes to accelerate tooth movement. In recent years these have had a higher growth thanks to the introduction of ultrasonic piezoelectric motors that helps to reduce conventional orthodontic time, damage to periodontal tissues and to the roots of the tooth concerned. Surgically they have no greater technical difficulty and offers a safe alternative for the patient who wants to complete the orthodontic treatment. We present the case of a patient to whom corticotomies were performed as part of orthodontics in order to correct his dentofacial deformity before undergoing orthognathic surgery. Satisfactory results and occlusal stability were obtained in four months, which means about a quarter of the time conventionally expected.

Key words: Corticotomies, orthodontics, periodontal tissues, surgery.
